Parent + Child Centered Design

1 in 5 children struggle with learning differences and oftentimes it runs in families so parents face similar challenges. As a newly formed collaboration between 15 nonprofits, Understood hired Digital Pulp to create an intuitive online resource that gave parents access to expert advice and personalized information to help them navigate their child’s education.
Our approach centered on supporting stressed parents with targeted solutions. We structured content by grade level and learning difference, enabling easy access to relevant content. The addition of a journal feature helped parents feel a sense of control and helped identify patterns. Recognizing the importance of peer support, we built an online community where parents could share experiences and discover parent-tested solutions, breaking through the isolation many families face.
We designed a suite of empathy-building games that simulate learning differences, helping parents understand the daily frustrations their child faces. Each game mimics traditional classroom worksheets but counter-intuitive interactions, allowed players to experience firsthand the barriers these students encounter.
